Why a hardware store's Google hours are often wrong

Google says a shop closes at 6pm. It actually closed at 4:30 because the owner's kid had a football match. Here's why that happens, and how we handle it.

You’ve done this before: Google Maps says a shop is open, you drive over, and the shutter’s down. Nobody updated it. Nobody was ever going to.

Most kedai hardware don’t manage their Google listing

A lot of independent hardware stores didn’t set up their own Google Business Profile — a customer did, years ago, or it got auto-generated from somewhere. Nobody at the shop has the login. So when the owner starts closing an hour early on Fridays, or the whole street shuts for a week over Chinese New Year, none of that reaches Google. The listing just sits there, confidently wrong.

This isn’t a Malaysia-specific problem, but it bites harder here because of how many small, family-run shops there are, and how irregular “normal hours” actually are around festival periods — Raya, CNY, Deepavali all move the calendar around in ways a generic Monday-to-Sunday table doesn’t capture. It’s just as true of a shophouse in Kuala Lumpur — Cheras, Kepong, Sentul, wherever — as it is of one in Johor Bahru or Klang.

What we do about it

Every listing on this site gets checked by an actual person before it goes live — see our method for the full rundown. For hours specifically, that means:

  • We note what the shop’s own signage or staff say, not just what Google shows.
  • We flag shops with no hours on record instead of leaving a blank that looks like an answer.
  • We re-check on a rolling basis, and immediately when someone tells us a shop’s changed.

That last part needs your help more than ours. If you drive out to a shop on this list and find it closed when we say it should be open, the fastest fix is telling us — every listing page has a correction link that’s already filled in with the shop’s name.

The honest limit

We can’t re-verify 189 shops’ hours every single day. What we can do is not pretend a stale Google listing is more accurate than it is, and fix it fast once we know it’s wrong. If you only take one thing from this: for anything time-sensitive, call before you drive. A phone number that rings is still the fastest way to know if a shop is actually open right now — hours are just one of five things worth checking before you make the trip.
